Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has congratulated Bangladesh for declaring an area of about 2,000 sq km around the coral island of St. Martin as a protected area.
The environmentalist congratulated the actor on his Twitter account on Friday. DiCaprio writes, “Congratulations to the Government of Bangladesh, local people and NGOs for declaring a new protected area around St. Martin’s Island.

Titanic star DiCaprio, 46, has already identified himself as an environmentalist.

Saint Martin is an atomic area of 7.3 sq km in the heart of the sea near the border of Myanmar in the far south-east of Bangladesh. Administratively, it is a union territory of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district. There are nine villages in all. About 10 thousand permanent residents.
St. Martin’s Island is a breeding ground for sea turtles. The island has 6 species of corals, 151 species of algae, 191 species of molasses, 40 species of crabs, 234 species of marine fish, five species of dolphins, four species of amphibians, 28 species of reptiles, 120 species of birds, 20 species of birds, 20 species of birds. Plants, two species of bats and many other species of animals lived at one time.
Many of these species are now on the verge of extinction. These biodiversity are also slowly disappearing as a result of climate change.
